SXSW is over…so what happened here?
Ill tell you what happened: I got depressed.
After a few days, I had a chance to chill in the hotel for a second and actually look at this experiment on an actual computer, as opposed to my phone.
And it sucked. Disappointing. The pictures look terrible, the videos are unintelligible, etc.
Then I looked at Pitchfork’s semi-live blogging from SXSW, and a few others. Made me even more depressed about this trainwreck.
So, the verdict:
I have no doubt that this platform, this channel, this means of communicating will become more and more ubiquitous, but the total convergence hasn’t happened yet.
In normal speak, it means my phone sucks.
This was meant to be an experiment with this platform (tumblr) to see how i might be able to utilize it in the future. And I learned that tumblr ROCKS (bad, if not esoteric pun). Seriously. it was effortless to update this thing on the fly. Its limited, but it gets the job done, and I have no doubt ill use it again for specialized applications.
This exercise in liveblogging was executed entirely on this:

Except mine has a cracked screen and a billion miles on it. A first gen Motorola Q running Windows Mobile 5 (?)
I pushed this thing to its absolute technical limitations. Its still a good phone, but not for mobile broad/narrowcasting of any sort.
SO:
I don’t like to do things unless they are done well.
tumblr gets thumbs up. two, even.
The Motorola Q, while a great phone, is not a field reporting unit.
This will be my last year at SXSW, and the music industry continues its long, painful decline…but that’s another post that you will be more likely to find at matdiablo.com.
